Belmonte
In century
XV, Belmonte was already an established community, with a proper rhythm,
living from agriculture, cadlle and, eventually, some commerce. In 1466,
D Afonso V, donates the leadership of Belmonte to Fernando Cabral,
father of Pedro Álvares Cabral, whose family was installed at Belmonte,
transforming the castle into a strenghtened residence, passing, Already
at the 20th century, Belmonte has turned over a page in its
history, with the diversification of its economical structure and the
installation of cloth industries.
Having the
City of Belmonte remained essentially dedicated to agriculture sector
until the beginning of the 70’s, it then saw industrial and comercial
activities to gain more and more importance. They had been born with
diverse cloth industries, which are presently one of the main factors of
economic sustenance of the Village of Belmonte, as well as of the
bordering cities. For the Village of Belmonte and the Village of Caria,
about 2.000 deriving workers are dislocated daily of the bordering City
and the Concelhos (Covilhã, Guard, Fundão and Sabugal), to which it is
necessary to give to better conditions to all the levels, so that they
are settled down here, without still forgetting, the existing population
to which is necessary to give better conditions of life and welfare
state. In the village the commerce occupies a prominence place, the pair
of the preservation of its Historical Center (Castle, Chapel of the
Cabrais, Church of the N.Srª of the Hope, Synagogue, Pillory, etc.) It
is of still registar the weekly Ecomuseu of the together Zêzere to the
City council, markets and the Annual Fairs of 25 of March. 2 of
September and 8 of December where they converge the populations of the
bordering villages.
